“To live anywhere in the world today and be against equality because
of race or color is like living in Alaska and being against snow.”
– William Faulkner –
Since 1990 a network of lawyers and law professors
have dedicated themselves to creating a safety net
for immigrants, protecting their rights of equality and
preventing discrimination
These professionals form the ASGI – Association
for Legal Studies on Immigration.
Today there are more than 400 volunteers in the association
If there are at-risk foreigners in Italy, it automatically means living on the fringes of society even if they want to feel integrated into society. Episodes of racism are a daily occurrence and discrimination denies them human dignity and creates obstacles in their life path.
We believe that all human being have the right to choose the community to which they belongs, respecting their rights and obligations, in Italy or abroad.
We needed help in finding the right interlocutor… until we had found ASGI.
At first the association was made up of university professors and lawyers, but with time it became a reference point for a variety of associations, public and private organisations, students, trainee lawyers, social workers and anyone else interested in the question of immigration.
ASGI works to create national and European guidelines for immigration, asylum and citizenship status, promoting the protection of immigrant rights in public debates.
A network of experts creates important local projects that have a strong territorial impact on amending discriminatory laws and regulations.
Therefore, we support the work of ASGI in order to defend European and Italian anti-discrimination laws, through the support of strategic lawsuits, and promote cultural integration through the protection of these rights.
THE INTERVENTION
OF THE FONDAZIONE
CHARLEMAGNE
As a result of our interventions we have been able to extend the ASGI activities in southern Italy, also focusing on the Rom and Sinti communities.
Thanks to the collaboration with the Fondazione Charlemagne, programs have been initiated that aim to inform the general public about the jurisdiction of litigations in matters of ethnic, racial and religious discrimination.
These are the five areas of intervention that are being focused on:
1) The annulment or modification of national, regional, and local laws that allow discriminatory profiling.
2) Publications with information about discrimination and legal options for immigrants that are accessible to lawyers and immigration service workers.
3) Greater collaboration between ASGI and national and local authorities.
4) Increased collaboration between ASGI and international and European organizations that monitor human rights, and in particular migrant rights (European Council, OSCE, EU FRA,UNITED, ENAR, etc.).
5) Development of an anti-discrimination database that is available to lawyers and immigration service workers.
