Community Organizing

Community
Organizing

“If people feel they don’t have the power to change a negative
situation, they don’t think about how to do it”.

Saul Alinsky – Rules for Radicals

IN CHICAGO, IN AROUND 1930, SAUL ALINSKY CONSIDERED A NEW APPROACH FOR GIVING VOICE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES, COMMUNITY ORGANIZING.

Community Organizing is a set of practices that make it possible for you to train local leaders and create non-partisan and independent civic organisations for urban regeneration, the development of local areas and social inclusion.

This method was initially applied in various American cities and it has spread over the last 80 years to various countries of the world, including Canada, Australia, Japan, France and Great Britain, thanks to the Industrial Areas Foundation.

On 16th March, 2017, the Associazione Community Organizing, a non-profit organisation, was set up in Rome by Diego Galli, don Alberto Orlando and Fabiana Musicco, with the aim of spreading an internationally recognised method of civic activation. This method is known for setting up organisations that work for the common good.

THE INTERVENTION

OF THE FONDAZIONE
CHARLEMAGNE

We believe that for a city to be reborn, we have to start from the suburbs.

Community Organizing is a project that involves the individual, the person, the local neighbourhood groups. It is precisely for this reason that the Fondazione Charlemagne decided to actively participate so that this methodology can develop in Rome.

By supporting this project, we once again wanted to challenge everyone’s attitude today, which is to look for immediate results.

There are no immediate results here.

Being able to train leaders who can motivate and engage whole communities in a healthy way is a long process but once we achieve our goal, we will know that we really have taken a step forward.

During this first year, the activities mainly concentrated on recruiting local ”anchor organisations” and training potential leaders, paying particular attention to minorities and disadvantaged populations.

We are sure that this project will bring tangible results.
New leaders and organisations set up by Community Organizing
will be able to bring the suburbs to the attention of the
institutions by speaking on behalf of the people who live there.
